I would like to submit a review of the track lighting system purchased on
February 17, 2009, and summarized below.
General Comments
Given the slightly custom installation requirements, none of the kits available
on your website was appropriate, and I decided to design the system using the
components listed above. The major reason for this customization was that I
wanted to provide power to the tracks directly with the output wires of the
Hatch transformer, thereby also avoiding the "domes" associated with your power
supply. Due to space limitations, an Electronic transformer was mandatory.
All components were perfectly engineered, and we marveled at their beautiful and
artistic design. Once assembled and installed, it enhanced the beauty and
atmosphere of our large kitchen. We had been concerned that the chrome and
modern look of the system might conflict with the conservative brick-and-beam
design of the room. Just the contrary: it provided just the right balance
between a traditional and a modern interior design.
Technical Notes
I examined each component carefully. The flat copper or alloy track conductors
were thick and high-gauge, and their resistance measured near zero Ohms on a
professional Fluke meter. The insulation barrier in the sandwich had a high
dielectric strength, much like Polystyrene, thereby avoiding electrical arcing
or breakdown. Components like I-connectors, quick-connect adapters and Jumper
Sets have a large surface area, preventing Ohmic drops, overheating and power
loss. The 8-gauge power cable has an outstanding inner conductor and thick outer
insulation jacket. The Ceiling Standoffs deserve special mention: I thought the
method for attaching the standoffs to the wooden beam using a screw hidden
inside the standoff was just clever.
Installation
Not surprisingly, the installation took several hours. Instructions were clear
and well written. I opened the packages before reading them and wondered : "how
am I ever going to figure this out?". I was especially nervous about electrical
shorts, and how the current would flow through the tiny holes and cables without
causing a short. Well, after reading the instructions and their warnings, I
tought I got it, and proceeded to assemble. After assembly, but before
connecting the power, I did a quick continuity check at the track, but NOT on
each pendant socket as you instructed. To my horror, I discovered a short!! I
tracked it down to one pendant socket, where I had violated the recommendation
in your instructions: I had tightened the bottom screw too much, and penetrated
the litted grommet! Fortunately, the packages included some essential spares.
The parts list included a jumper set because I could not think of a simpler way
to power the tracks directly from the transformer. I cut the jumper in half, and
did the required splicing. After some final checks for tightness, I turned on
the power (via an electronic dimmer), and everything worked fine.
Conclusions and Recommendations
I cannot think of any criticism about this marvelous system, only a
recommendation: You might think of adding some kits to accommodate my custom
situation. I suspect that electricians, homeowners or businesses might face a
similar situation. A wider selection of pendants would be advisable, including
smaller flood lights. The Focus light had to be returned because it was too
large, inconsistent with the overall design. I almost forgot to thank Francisco
for his assistance in this project.
